PD Presentation - Rhythm and Pattern

Each department is taking turns to present a PD session on a Monday morning. This week was the turn of the Creative Arts department. We decided to focus on Maths and specifically, rhythm and pattern in music, design and art.

Maths in Y9 Foodtech - Weight conversion

As a staff, we have been asked by the Maths department to make Maths more explicit within our planning and lessons. With my Y9 food class, we have a single period where we do some theory work, reading the recipe and planning and we have a double period a week where we cook. In today's single period, I got the students to look at weight conversions as when they are looking at recipes online, there is a variety of different kinds of weight that can be used.

Maths in Y7 Food Technology

My Year 7 class on Friday were making chocolate brownies. This was going to be the first time they were going to be measuring out the ingredients themselves as prior to this week, I had everything weighed out ready in bowls for them. They also get a printed version of the recipe in their kitchens to refer to while they are working.

The recipe is set up on the class site here, with extra reading and videos to watch.

The recipe calls for using the measuring jug for 1/2 cups, 1 cup and 1 1/2 cups of ingredients. Some of the measuring jugs had it marked as 1/2 and some had it measured as 0.5.

We had to have a conversation about the equivalent measurements of fractions and decimals.

Year 13 - Measuring the auditorium

My Year 13 class need to know the size of the auditorium, the position of the doors and the size of the stage. They need this information as part of their research before they start doing their set designs.
I first thought that I could get a copy of the technical drawings of the school, but then decided that they needed the experience of measuring.

They were fairly hopeless at it to be honest.
  • Understanding of measuring in mm
  • Understanding how to measure something that it longer than the measuring tape
  • Understanding all the information that they need to collect.
  • Working together to measure and record the information.
We definitely need to do more measuring activities so that when they start working out how big to make their designs and making scale models of them, they have a clearer idea of what to do.

We then sat all together in the classroom afterwards and compared notes. The measurements that they took were added to two diagrams on the whiteboard.

This information has started to be put together on a scale drawing using Adobe Illustrator.
This is the plan view that has been completed.
